"Stuffed" Peppers


Easy and delicious!

We recently received delicious grassfed Gouda cheese, Italian Sausage and amazing Hungarian peppers in our CSA from Macaroni Kid sponsor, Fresh Fork Market. I really wanted stuffed peppers but didn’t have time to actually stuff the peppers (does anyone?). I decided to take a short cut which was a huge hit in my house!

Ingredients:

1 lb. mild italian sausage
1 ¼ cup rice
1 cup homemade spaghetti sauce (or use your favorite jar of spaghetti sauce)
3-4 hot hungarian peppers, cut in strips*

With school back in session, what are your plans for the little ones?

The first Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m., starting September 7, Macaroni Kid Cleveland East is teaming up with Whole Foods at Cedar Center for a play date!

A Twist on Packing Lunches


As the school year approaches, I know I am going to be packing a lot of lunches!  My kids are also getting tired of the same old things each day, so I've decided to get creative.  I discovered the art of packing Bento lunches and thought it looked like so much fun.

Sunday, August 28 - Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation Celebrates One World Day

This annual celebration will begin with the re-dedication of Lesya Ukrainka statue in the Ukrainian Garden located on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. Enjoy performances from the Kashtan Ukrainian Dancers, Zorya singing ensemble, and the Irish Dancers, followed by the traditional Parade of Flags. The Parade of Flags will start from the newly installed Syrian Garden at 3:00 p.m., and will feature various nationalities in their costumes. New U.S. citizens will be sworn in by U.S. District Judge Honorable Christopher A. Boyko.   Ethnic delicacies, Lolly the Trolley tours of the Cultural Gardens, and prizes will be available throughout the afternoon.

Hershey Children's Garden is a child's kingdom in which to freely explore a koi-filled pond, an awesome tree house, a maze, water pumps, planting houses and, yes, mud. After a long winter, kids look forward to creating mud masterpieces.   Their creative endeavors deserve to be rewarded with a special serving of ice cream on the Geis Terrace each Tuesday afternoon. We'll even let the non-mud-pie-making adults — with or without kids — enjoy a tasty frozen treat as well.

Saturday, September 3 through Monday, September 5 - Cleveland National Air Show presented by Discount Drug Mart

The Cleveland National Air Show is a family tradition and one of the largest annual events in Northeast Ohio. The Air Show provides six hours of action-packed flying, special exhibits, 50- plus aircraft on display and more. Fans can tour unique aircraft, help pack a parachute, get a picture with a pilot or just enjoy the day-long festival of flying, food and outdoor fun. This year features the US Air Force Thunderbirds,  Jim “Fang” Maroney’s “Super” Chipmunk Aerobatics, Kent Pietsch Jelly Belly Comedy Act and RV Top Landing, Jacquie B’s “Wild Women Do,” and School Time Jet Bus.

National Toasted Marshmallow Day!

Have your very own marshmallow toasting party on National Marshmallow Toasting Day?  

We dare you!  NO  We double dare you!  

Ancient Egyptians would extract sap from the marshmallow plant and mix it with nuts and honey. Another pre-modern recipe uses the pith of the marshmallow plant, rather than the sap. The stem was peeled back to reveal the soft and spongy pith, which was boiled in sugar syrup and dried to produce a soft, chewy confection.
