The Olympic flame dates back to the first Olympic games in ancient Greece.  A flame was ignited by the sun and kept burning until the end of the games.  The flame represents purity and a quest for perfection and was introduced to the modern Olympics at the 1928 games in Amsterdam.  The Olympic Torch relay, where the flame is transported from Greece to the site of the games, was introduced in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin.  To commemorate the start of the 2012 Olympics on Friday, make this simple ...

DIY Olympic Medals

Salt Dough Recipe:
1 cup salt
1 cup flour
3/4 cup water

Combine the flour and salt and add water gradually. Knead it until it gets a dough-like consistency. If it's too sticky, add more flour. If it won't hold together, add more water 1 tsp at a time. 

Materials:
Acrylic Paints (gold, silver, and bronze)
Paint brush(s)

Shape Salt Dough into a circle about one cm thick. I used a mason jar lid to help shape it, but cookie cutters ...

Saturday, July 28 - Caring Cubs event: School supply collection and a presentation from the Shaker Hts K-9 Unit

Having the necessary supplies is essential for success and self-esteem in school. Caring Cubs is helping the Shaker Heights School District to provide supplies to students in need. All Caring Cubs attendees are asked to bring new school supplies to our July event. Everything from pens and pencils to markers to backpacks are welcomed and appreciated (click here for a specific supply list). Please use the school supply donation as an opportunity to discuss helping others with your Caring Cub. The donation can be especially meaningful if you allow your children to select the supplies that they would want to receive.

Bring your favorite teddy bear to a special Teddy Bear Picnic. Take your bear to the UH Rainbow Injury Prevention Teams' "Teddy Clinic" for human finger casting, teddy bear check-ups and more! Then enjoy making teddy ID beaded bracelets, music, story times and a special teddy bear snack! UH Rainbow Injury Prevention Team will be onsite in our parking lot conducting FREE infant, booster and car seat checks! State Farm Insurance will be providing FREE bears to the first 150 children (each day) whose family participates in the FREE UH Rainbow Injury Prevention Team Child Safety Seat Check.

Mary, who was born with spina bifida, dreamed of being able to dance as a child even though she was in a wheelchair. Now as an adult, she has extended the possibility of people with all kinds of abilities to perform together. The piece, entitled "Dancing On A Dream" shows the struggles and triumphs of Mary's life, the perseverance of keeping a physically integrated dance company alive, and ultimately making her dream to dance despite her disability a reality. Dancing Wheels by Patricia McMahon and John Godt, describes the creation, training and performances of The Dancing Wheels Company.

Kids can channel their inner artist and make mud-pie masterpieces every Tuesday in the Hershey Children's Garden. Whether decorated with flowers or shaped like a dinosaur, every mud pie deserves recognition.  

After making mud pies, you can cool off with an ice-cold, refreshing float. The Garden serves up root beer floats and Orange Crush floats every Tuesday afternoon on Geis Terrace for kids and adults.

This Gates Mills Branch Library 2-day program is a multi-disciplinary experience where students will produce original work, such as the creation of their own website, a recorded piece of original electronic music using turntables, and a digital stop motion animated video. The program is presented by the Progressive Arts Alliance that draws on their extensive work with the media arts in dynamic educational programs. Home Depot workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills and tool safety, while at the same time helping to instill a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, this fun time allows for quality one-on-one time between adults and children.   In addition to the newly constructed project kit, each child receives a kid-sized orange apron, similar to The Home Depot associates' aprons, and an achievement pin.
