Review: Piper Home Security

May 26, 2015
Product was provided to me for review. Opinions are my own.

Home security has been on my mind a lot recently.

We had contractors at our house for weeks which means our backdoor was unlocked most of the days. Someone was usually home but, not always. It was perfect timing that I was asked to review Piper, an inside home monitoring system that gives me peace-of-mind about what is going on at home while I'm not there.

Piper, on the left, can see the back door and the full staircase.

With no monthly fee, Piper is perfect for our as-needed usage. The camera, which has night-vision, a back-up battery for power outages, the ability to pan and zoom and pet sensitivity settings, is all run through an app on your device (I use my iPhone). From the Piper app, I am able to put the camera into home, away and vacation mode. I have different "rules" set up for each mode. When at home, I have all notifications turned off but, when I'm out, I want to know (via text, notification and/or email) if there has been movement or a loud noise. For vacation mode, I also have it set to let me know if there is a large temperature shift.

The camera also has z-wave integration. The camera’s z-wave feature allow it to connect to home automation accessories that let me remotely control the turning on and off of appliances, lights and much more. I love the dimmer which allows me to not only turn a lamp on and off from the app (even when out of town!) but also to dim it if I don't want it as bright. You can also set the dimmer to automatically come on after a certain amount of time or when it gets dark. In addition, there are accessories that alert you if a window or door has been opened.

Twice I needed to contact support via email at Piper and both times they were swift and easily helped answer my questions. I couldn't believe how quickly they responded. I applaud them for their amazing customer service.

Not only can my family rest assured that we’ll always be in the know when it comes to what’s going on in our home through temperature, sound, light, and humidity reports, we can also all sign up to be in the notification network incase one (or a few) of us are unable to check our phone the moment we’re notified, and that’s really reassuring. I don’t know what’s better; being secure in knowing that my family can communicate and view our house anytime day and night, or that it comes at an extremely affordable price? This level of security is priceless, after all.
