My son got a butterfly garden for his birthday, and we loved watching the caterpillars eat, form a chrysalis and turn into beautiful butterflies. Here's an easy craft to do with the kids when it's raining or if it's too hot! Make it a learning craft by reading Eric Carle's Very Hungry Caterpillar or Deborah Heiligman's From Caterpillar to Butterfly (both available onamazon.com).
You'll Need:
Construction Paper or colored card stock
Pipe cleaners
Markers, crayons or anything else you want to use to decorate your butterfly
Scissors
Directions:
Fold the construction paper in half length wise. Starting with the edge where the paper is folded, draw a backwards "3" so that it resembles half a butterfly. Cut it out to make a symmetrical butterfly shape.
Have your kid decorate the butterfly shape to their heart's content.
Once the butterfly is embellished, fold a pipe cleaner lengthwise and wrap it around the crease of the butterfly. (You may need to trim the butterfly a little so the pipe cleaner fits around the middle.)
Twist the ends together so they form the butterfly's antennae.
