This year will mark the 50th anniversary of the Cuyahoga River fire on June 22, 1969. The crooked river, like waterways across the country, had been ablaze before, but a photo published in the Time Magazine made the Cleveland fire a symbol for the state of America’s environmental resources and sparked important conservation efforts.

By reexamining this polluted past and celebrating a river reborn we can see how our actions have an impact and inspire youth to become stewards of the natural world.

For our “Kids Take Action to Heal the Environment” weekend, the Aquarium invites students to see some of the animals affected by the quality of our natural resources and to check out environmental art and cleanup ideas created by the next generation of leaders. Saturday, February 16 – Monday, February 18, children ages 2 to 18 will be eligible for $5 off of general, in-person admission.*

  • Students from Cleveland’s Menlo Park Academy will display artwork created from beach litter. The colorful species are on view all weekend, but 5th graders will be in the Aquarium interpreting their work for guests on Saturday, February 16, 10am – 4pm.
  • The Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy robotics club will demonstrate three robots they designed to help pick up Great Lakes’ litter on Saturday, February 16, 10am – 1pm.
  • Three whimsical dresses designed by up-and-coming conservation-minded designers are also on view. Created from discarded materials, these Recycled Runway fashions support Sandusky Bay conservation efforts and are displayed with tips on protecting our environment.

Guests also can participate in a sustainability scavenger hunt for a chance to win an annual family pass for the Aquarium and make an environmental action pledge to create a future-focused fish mural.

All activities are presented in partnership with Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District. Guests are encouraged to share photos and tips from the day using hashtag #RiverReborn.
