A Refresh on Recycling: The Do's and Don'ts of Curbside Collection

By Nature Center at Shaker Lakes March 5, 2019

Hasn't recycling become complicated? Contamination, single-stream processing and import restrictions from China are all the buzz these days. Curbside recycling is an easy way to reduce landfill waste and with careful attention, we can make a big difference. Unfortunately, not all items can be sent to our recycling facilities and contaminated items can ruin the entire batch. While each city has their own guidelines for collection, all of Cuyahoga County’s recycling ends up in the same place. We encourage you to review your city’s website for specific collection details but here’s a refresher on recycling do’s and don’ts.

DO recycle cans, cartons, glass bottles & jars, paper, boxes, and plastic bottles and jugs. All items can be combined, make sure they are emptied and rinsed.

DO reduce – buying less is always best, especially single-use plastics. Repair and rehome when possible. Some items that are not accepted in curbside recycling can still find a home elsewhere. Check with the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District for information on how to dispose of specific items.

DON'T recycle plastic bags, take-out containers, hoses, ropes, cups, lids, plastic utensils, broken ceramics or durable plastics (hangers/toys).

DON'T let contamination ruin the batch – make sure items are emptied and rinsed. Only include approved items. It’s better to trash it than take the risk.

Be sure to check cuyahogarecycles.com frequently. It’s a great resource where you can learn more about local and global recycling and search household items for information on where to recycle them.
